Player's Guide
What is Ricochet?
Ricochet is a
new Half-Life MOD from Valve that features fast-action, arcade-oriented
gameplay in futuristic environments.
Played from a third-person perspective, games of Ricochet can
be played one-on-one, two-on-two, or
open arena, and linked ladder tournaments. Instead of traditional ammunition, you are armed with three discs. Your ground space
consists of pads that are navigated by directional jump arrows. Points are scored
by using your discs to knock your opponent from their pads.
Movement
Ricochet uses the same forward, backward, and
strafing movements of Half-Life and TFC, with the addition of jump arrows which
automatically launch you in the direction they indicate.
- The first rule of Ricochet
is There Is No Jump Key .
To
jump from one pad to another, move onto the yellow triangular jump arrows, and you
will move automatically.
-
For jumps that take you where you're meant to go, move onto the jump arrow and let go
of any movement keys while in the air.
- For more advanced jumping, steer yourself while you are in the air. You can land on enemy
pads this way and increase your battle area.
Know your weapon
Throw your discs with the primary mouse
button.
- You have a maximum of
three discs in play at one time. A thrown disc will attempt to return to you after three
bounces, and will teleport back if that fails.
Powerups are available on all maps. There are several
different types:
-
Powershot: Grab the swirling red powerup and you get
discs that hit your opponent harder.
- Triple
Shot: These three spinning purple discs turns each of yours into a
deadly triple-disked attack.
- Fast
Shot : Green circles will make your discs move much faster to
catch your enemy.
- Freeze
Shot: Blue fragments create a disc that slows your opponent to
a crawl.
- Teleporters are located on the sides of the
arena. These flickering purple segments will pull in your disc and shoot it
out from a corresponding teleporter. Use these to increase your
points.
- To activate a Decapitator disc, you
must have three discs in your posession. Fire using your right mouse button, and your one disc will
decapitate your opponent instantly if you hit them.
Scoring
Scores can be seen with the Tab key at any time
during play. Points are awarded at the end of each round.
- Scoring consists of one
point per kill. You can add to your score by earning
points for each teleport and bounce that result in a kill. Go through a teleporter and bounce twice,
and you earn 4 points for one kill.
Gameplay
Ricochet uses multi-serve technology to allow multiple
matches to be played simultaneously on the same server. This
dramatically increases playing
time, and decreases time spent in queue.
- Each arena will
fill with it's maximum
number of players, and the remaining players will be queued and view the game in
free-roaming camera mode.
- The tab key will
bring up a list of active players, queued players, and all
scores.
- As each game ends,
the winner will remain in the arena and the loser will be cycled
out.
