Installation instructions

Before you can use Photoshop CS or ImageReady® CS, you must install Photoshop and ImageReady onto your hard drive. If you're using a Windows® system, you'll need to activate your copy of Photoshop within 30 days of installation.

To install Photoshop CS in Windows:

1. Do one of the following:

If you are installing Photoshop CS from a CD, insert the Application CD into your CD-ROM drive. If the CD launches automatically, use the buttons on-screen to start the Photoshop installer. If the CD does not launch automatically, click the Start button, choose Run from the menu, click Browse, choose the CD-ROM icon from the Look In menu, double-click Setup.exe in the Photoshop folder, and click OK in the Run dialog box.
If you downloaded Photoshop CS from the Web, the installer should launch automatically. If it doesn't, click the Start button, choose Run from the menu, click Browse, locate the download directory, double-click Setup.exe in the Photoshop folder, and click OK in the Run dialog box.

2. Click Next in the Setup dialog box.

3. A warning dialog box prompts you to close all Adobe applications before proceeding to avoid restarting your system after installation. Close any open Adobe applications, and then click OK.

4. Choose the language that you would prefer to view the EULA, and click Next.

5. Read the end user license agreement, and click Accept.

6. Enter your name and company information, and type the serial number from your software packaging. Then click Next, and confirm that the information you entered is correct.

7. In the Destination screen, the installation location is displayed. If you want to change the installation location, click Browse, and then specify a destination folder.

8. Click Next.

9. Specify file type associations, and click Next:

To associate Photoshop or ImageReady with a file type, select the file type in the list and select Photoshop or ImageReady. When you double-click a file of a certain type on the desktop or in Windows Explorer, the associated application is automatically launched. This association overrides any other application that may originally have been associated with the file type.
To continue automatically launching the original application associated with a file type, select the file type in the list and select NC (No Change). You must select NC for a file type if you want to prevent that file type from launching Photoshop or ImageReady automatically.

10. Review your installation settings, and then click Next. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the installation.

11. When the installation process is complete, a message tells you that Photoshop is installed. Click Finish. You may be automatically prompted to activate your version of Photoshop CS. For instructions, see "Activating Adobe Photoshop" at the end of this document.

To install Photoshop CS in Mac OS:

Photoshop CS cannot be installed in OS X from a user account whose password contains extended characters (high-ASCII). If necessary, create an account with a password that contains only regular characters, then log into the system using that account and launch the Photoshop CS installer.

About Installing Photoshop in Mac OS from a Network File Server

A change has been made to the Photoshop installer, which now uses Mac OS X Authorization Services for user authentication. This change allows the installer to install files in the proper location with the proper permissions. This new installer may not work correctly from a network file server, however.

For those users who access their Photoshop installer from a network server, the solution is to copy the installer to the local machine, or to change the permissions on the server so that the group "everyone" can read the server volume in question. Contact your IS manager about making this change to your servers.

1. Do one of the following:

If you are installing Photoshop CS from a CD, insert the Application CD into your CD-ROM drive. Double-click the CD icon on the desktop, and double-click the Install Adobe Photoshop CS icon.
If you downloaded Photoshop CS from the Web, double-click the disk icon on the desktop, and double-click the Install Adobe Photoshop CS icon.

2. Enter your administrator's user name and password and click OK.

3. Choose the language that you'd prefer to view the end user license agreement.

4. Read the end user license agreement, and click Accept.

5. Enter your name and company information, and type the serial number from your software packaging. Then click Next.

6. Review the registration information on the screen. If the information is correct, click Continue. If the information is not correct, click the Back button and make corrections.

7. Review the Adobe Photoshop Read Me file. After reading the file, click Continue.

8. If you want to change the installation location, choose Select Folder from the pop-up menu, and then specify a folder.

9. When the installation process is complete, a message tells you that Photoshop is installed. Click Quit.

After installing Photoshop, please register your copy using the online registration software (if you have a modem and the software is available in your version of the program), or fill out and return the enclosed warranty registration card. Registering your software allows Adobe to continue to provide you with the highest-quality software, offer technical support, and inform you about new Photoshop software developments.

Activating Adobe Photoshop (Windows only)

You will need to activate your copy of Photoshop within 30 days after you install the software. You can activate your copy of Photoshop using your internet connection or by calling customer service. For more information about activation, see the Activation ReadMe located on the installation CD.

To activate Adobe Photoshop:

1. Start Photoshop as described above in Starting Adobe Photoshop. (If you've just installed the software, the Activation screen appears automatically.)

2. The first Activation screen appears. Do one of the following:

If Photoshop detects an internet connection, a message will appear on the screen, asking if you would like to activate over the internet. Click Next to start the internet activation process immediately.
If you want to activate by phone, or if you want to activate at a later time, click the Other Activation Options button.

3. If you clicked the Other Activation Options button, you can select one of the following activation options:

Choose "Over the Internet" and then click Next to start the activation process immediately. A status screen lets you know how it's progressing. If you're having trouble, try activating by telephone.
Choose "By telephone via the Automated Software Activation System" to begin phone activation. Click the Next button to bring up a screen with the Adobe Customer Service phone number, information about your copy of Adobe Photoshop, and instructions for entering your authorization code. Once you call Adobe with this information you'll receive an authorization code. Enter the authorization code just as you hear it. Click the Next button to complete the activation.
Choose "Remind me" if you want to delay the activation process by a few days. Choose a reminder option from the pop-up list, and then click the Next button. You still need to activate within 30 days if you choose this option.
